Abstract Seascape Painting

  • Abstract Seascape Paintings ($20) I'm looking for an abstract seascape painting I saw in a text book in 1980. I think the title was "The Baltic Sea" but I've looked for 20 years and cannot find an abstract painting with that title. The painting is several horizontal lines of color (shades listed bottom to top): dark brown fading to light brown, then light green fading to dark green, then light blue fading to dark blue. When looking at the painting w/ the title in mind, you "see" the beach, ocean and sky. It was the first time I truly understood abstract art. I WANT THE CORRECT NAME OF THE PAINTING, A .JPG IMAGE, AND A SITE WHERE I CAN OBTAIN A PRINT.

  • Your descriptions sounds rather like one of the many paintings of the Baltic by the German expressionist painter, Emil Nolde (1867 - 1956). See, for example, the reproductions on the following website http://home.t-online.de/home/ulf-westphal/nolde.htm. If you do a Google image search, you will find many other repros of Nolde's paintings; you should also be able to find books on him, which may include the actual painting you recall.


  • To answer J Philipp: I don't remember the text books name, but it was in the REFERENCE section of the library. The photo was in the MODERN ART SECTION under ABSTRACT or IMPRESSIONIST. It wasn't a very big picture, about 3 in. x 3 in. At the time my class as studying Paul Klee and his contemporaries. For years I thought the painting was by Klee but can't find it. Klee does have a painting with several horizontal lines, but it has an arrow in the middle and the the colors aren't what I remember. The painting was about 20 horizontal rectangles of color graduating in colors as I described. The rectangles were painted with a brush so the edges were soft, not hard defined blocks (like the Klee painting). Both of the paintings you found are nice, but not what I remember. The second one is close, but the painting I'm looking for has more of the colors and graduations. Thank you for searching. I hope we find the painting. This has been on my mind a very long time.
